If you’re anything like me, you live life a-mile-a-minute and you’re never 100% sure where the day is going to take you. When friends call for an impromptu night out, a short walk turns into an all-day urban wander, or maybe (!) you get an unexpected date, it’s a real bummer to find yourself without your beauty essentials. You don’t need to go carting your whole makeup bag around with you everywhere though. It only takes a few essentials to look polished and feel pretty. In my case, I make sure that these three must-have items are at my fingertips no matter where I am:
1. Chapstick or Lip Balm
Chapped lips really cramp my style, especially in the winter. That’s why I always make sure I have a tube of chapstick in reach. I like to use chapstick with SPF in it, because I’m so pale that even my lips occasionally get sunburned. Sometimes I use a chapstick with a little hint of color in it – it’s like lipstick, but without the commitment. Burt's Bees tinted lip balms are nice, because the color is not too strong and the ingredients are all-natural.
What if – surprise! – your friends ask you to meet them for a drink after work or the gym, and you haven’t even bothered to pretty yourself up today? That’s why I like to keep my mascara right where I can find it at all times. Even if you haven’t done a full face of makeup, a touch of mascara will bring out your eyes and polish your look. It’s a subtle change, but it does make a big difference. If you’re like me, maybe you pair your touch of mascara with a tinted chapstick and you can go from couch-potato to ready-to-go in a minute flat.
I find a good mascara can tend to be surprisingly expensive, especially since I try to use beauty products with natural ingredients. Yves Rocher 360º Length Mascara is a good solution, because it combines botanical ingredients (including almond protein to strengthen lashes) with an affordable price. You might say, “But that’s not a beauty item!” Oh, but it is. I’ve already mentioned my pale skin. I burn very easily, and a sunburn is not a good look on anybody. Besides, I want to make sure my skin still looks young years from now. Even if you’re not someone who usually gets sunburned, the sun’s UV rays can still damage your skin and cause wrinkles. That’s why I keep sunblock with me no matter where I am. That way, whenever I know I’m going to be spending some time outside, I can just slap on some sunblock and not worry about burning. I have mini sunblock tubes in my purse and backpack, plus bigger ones at home. My favorite brand to use is Neutrogena's Helioplex sunscreen. There are different versions for body and face, with SPF up to 100. I especially make sure to keep my facial sunblock nearby – it’s oil free, so it doesn’t feel greasy and won’t cause breakouts. If beauty is only skin deep, then I’m going to make sure I have beautiful skin!
