As I was looking for a place the wife and I could go for a quick, spontaneous, unplanned end of summer vacation, (taking advantage of our kids visiting grandpa and grandma) I kept finding some places popping up more than others as recommended, affordable vacation spots right here in the USA. These 5 seem to be the consensus picks, and after doing my own digging on them, I agree.
Myrtle Beach, SC
With miles of beaches, golf courses galore, and some of the best seafood on the planet, Myrtle Beach is a real winner. Throw in a healthy dose of their famous Southern hospitality, and you’ve found a little piece of paradise.
The Carolina Opry
Pirates Voyage Fun, Feast, and Adventure
Yellowstone National Park, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming
Be prepared to be completely awestruck by its natural beauty. Yellowstone is the largest national park in the lower 48, and America’s oldest. It’s been wowing visitors since 1872 and from the moment you arrive, you’ll see why.
Old Faithful Geyser/Upper Basin
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Sporting very affordable hotels, great music, great food, and more great music, Nashville is an easy pick. Plus, it’s within driving distance of the Great Smoky Mountains if you want to enjoy the great outdoors. All in all, a great place to spend some time.
Grand Ole Opry
Belle Meade Plantation
General Jackson Showboat
If you’ve never visited the nation’s capital, you really need to, at least once in your life. History comes alive wherever you look, and where else can you run into a Senator and complain about something Congress is or isn’t doing?
National Monuments and Memorials
Kayak Along the C & O Canal
Besides being on many “Top Vacation Spots” lists, the "Live Music Capital of the World" can be found on just about every “Best Places to Live” and every other “Best” list. Be aware that once you’re there, you may never want to leave. The area around Austin is full of many day-trip destinations, and San Antonio is just 90 minutes away.
Barton Springs Pool
The Alamo (San Antonio)
So, which one did we end up choosing? Well, since they all have so many strong points, I wanted to put all their names in a hat and then pick one out, but my wife said that was “stupid.” Fine, in the interests of starting our getaway off on an amiable note, I let her choose, and the winner was...Nashville! But, since she got to choose, I said it was only fair that she had to find a discount, go on Expedia and book the trip. Luckily, she agreed. So, get ready Grand Ole Opry cuz here we come!
