One of the best decisions I ever made was adopting my dog from a rescue organization. When she was just one year old, her owners dropped her off at the pound (on Christmas Eve!). She had been horribly mistreated; her fur was super matted and she had burrs in her ears from being left outside. She was underweight and unloved. Today, she’s a happy puppy who brings so much joy to my life. And just because I’m obsessed, here’s a pic:
So, I can tell you firsthand what a gift it is to adopt a pet. Since June is Adopt a Cat Month, I thought I’d list just 5 of the many reasons you should consider giving a good home to a cat or dog.
1. You’ll get a constant companion and true friend.
The best part about owning a pet is the devotion they give you. There’s nothing better than arriving home to have my puppy greet me - seriously, she gets really excited. So, it’s a bit of an ego boost to have another being that just loves you for being there. There are so many affectionate dogs and cats that deserve a good home - you might be surprised at how much positivity they bring to your home.
2. You’ll save a life.
I wish I could do more to spread the word about how horrible puppy mills and pet shops are. Some animals are treated very poorly, and they’re often bred solely to make money. Shockingly, over 2.7 million dogs and cats are euthanized every year because they’re not adopted from shelters. Think how good it would feel to save just one of these animals. To find pets that need homes, check out Petfinder.com. Their easy-to-use site makes it a snap to find a pet that will work for you. It’s actually where I found my little pup!
3. You can get savings on goods and services.
If you adopt through programs offered by stores like Petco, you can get tons of savings on supplies you need to welcome your new pet home. Their New Pet Center allows you to look for pets to adopt, figure out what items you need (dog beds, food bowls, leashes), and then offers you discounts to use in the store or online. You can also find extra savings when you use coupons at checkout.
4. You’ll save money.
If you’re budget-conscious like me, you’ll appreciate the fact that rescue cats and dogs are much cheaper than the ones you can purchase at a puppy mill or pet store. In fact, my dog was free! Also, most pets that are at shelters have already been spayed or neutered and microchipped, so you don’t have to incur those extra costs.
5. Your health will improve.
Studies have shown that pets can help improve your physical health as well as your emotional well-being. Just hanging out with your cat or dog has been proven to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, strengthen your heart, improve blood circulation, and reduce the loss of bone tissue. And that doesn’t even include the fitness benefits you can get from taking your dog for a walk!
There are so many reasons to adopt a pet. Trust me: you’ll be so glad you did!
