How to Do a Bedroom Makeover on a Budget

Out of all the rooms in your home, your bedroom is the most important. It should act as a haven for relaxation, somewhere special you can head where you’re not expected to do anything but just chill. Because your room is special, it can be frustrating when you’re sick of the decor. The good news is that you don’t need tons of money to do a bedroom makeover. Check out these 9 tips for revamping your bedroom on a budget.

1. Add some fun throw pillows.

Throw pillows are a super simple way to bring some bright colors into your room. Barbara Reich, from, recommends adding fun pillows as “an inexpensive way to give a brand new feel to the room.” You can experiment with different shades or prints to mix things up.

There are tons of options for cheap pillows (at stores like Target or Walmart). Wayfair also has a set of 2 faux suede pillows for just $23.90 in tons of different colors. The best part is that you can easily switch them out for new ones when you feel like it’s time for a change.

2. Throw on a fresh coat of paint.

If your room needs a new look, consider repainting. Mona K. Wood-Sword, an interior decorator who’s taken on multiple redecorating projects on a budget, said, “Nothing changes a room more dramatically than paint, and that can usually fit in anyone's budget if we do the painting ourselves. Look for paint sales if you're really watching your pennies.”

Don’t have the cash to paint every wall? Ashita Patel, from, suggests creating interest “with a fun accent wall by using a contrasting paint color or patterned wallpaper. Only modifying one wall is easier, faster and more cost-effective, but it can still change the entire look of your bedroom.”

3. Change your bedding.

A brand new comforter with a fun print or bright colors can easily breathe new life into your bedroom. You can find a 3-piece coverlet set from Wayfair for just $54.90 (and you can save even more by using a coupon at checkout!).

Wood-Sword recommends checking out online sites like Kmart or Bed Bath and Beyond for other great bargains. She said, “I also love mixing and matching designs, colors, and textures to avoid an overly-matchy-matchy look. If you're crafty, sewing your own pillow cases from scrap or bargain fabric can also be added to the mix of store-bought bedding. And don't forget about adding a headboard if you don't already have one.” You can make an inexpensive headboard instead of buying one by getting a piece of wood, and then covering it with foam padding and fabric. This is another fantastic way to add some more color to your space instead of just using a boring neutral!

4. Put up window coverings.

You can also add more color to your room by putting up curtains. Curtainworks has a huge selection to choose from, including this fun cheetah print curtain panel. Not only will it give a unique vibe to your room, it’s less than 10 bucks! Plus, you can get discount codes to use for major savings as well!

Wood-Sword points out that curtains can also add “softness and a feeling of coziness. Curtains frame your window but also add definite style to a room as well.” Don’t want to spend the money on brand-new curtains? Check out this video on how to make curtains without sewing a stitch!

5. Rearrange your furniture.

You know that saying, ‘work with what you’ve got.’ It totally applies to redecorating your bedroom! Reich recommends using “what you have. Maybe there’s a table in your living room that would look better in the bedroom. Move things around.”

Even if you just move your bed to another wall or place a chair in a different place, you’ll still feel like there’s been a change - which could be all you need to feel like you’ve revamped your space.

6. Hang artwork on the walls.

Maybe you’re tired of staring at the same blank walls. Putting up some new artwork can change the whole feel of your bedroom. Wood-Sword suggests heading to thrift stores for cheap framed artwork, while Andrea Berkman, from, said you can “frame some wrapping paper...I buy some really cool wrapping paper (chevron, stripes, etc.), matte it, and frame it. It looks adorable!”

Want something that looks a little more professional? Check out for posters or prints that will go with your decor. You can also hang up some family photos; if you frame pics that bring up happy memories, your bedroom will have plenty of positive energy!

7. Put up wall decals.

If you don’t feel like doing something as permanent as paint, try using wall decals. They’re inexpensive and easily removable (perfect for someone who’s just renting!). Wayfair offers some graphic wall decals with text for $31.90 or some bright starburst designs for $40.50.

For more decal options, you can also check out Amazon. They have a huge selection of everything from flowers and birds to quotes and graphics that will make your walls look super unique.

8. Add interesting accessory pieces.

One of the cheapest ways to do a makeover is to add in some exciting accent pieces. These are usually inexpensive and easy to find. Wood-Sword suggests changing your lighting. She said, “If you have a dated fixture or one that doesn't go with your new style, there are many great inexpensive options at places like IKEA, Home Depot, Lowe's, and Lamps Plus. Also, if you're going for retro, check thrift stores and re-sell warehouses that save materials and items from houses that are torn down.” You can also check out lamps from Wayfair, like a mini table lamp in a fun color (for just $13!)

Other accessories could include fun throw blankets (like this acrylic throw from Wayfair for $19), a vanity table and mirror, or an ottoman in a cool color.

9. Get rid of the clutter.

Even if you don’t have the funds for completely redecorating your bedroom, you can still make sure the space looks great. Do a full cleaning of your room, and make sure to get rid of all the stuff you don’t need. You’ll be surprised how great a room can look without a bunch of clutter!

You can get some stylish storage and organizational options from Wayfair with a storage ottoman like this one in a crazy fun print. It not only looks cool, but you can also throw in stuff you aren’t using to make the room look tidier!

So, stop worrying about coming up with cash for a bedroom makeover, and get decorating!
