People always think that building a blog from a scratch is difficult, but if you use the right tools and my 4 easy steps your Wordpress blog will be up and running in under 30 minutes.
Steps 1 & 2: Choose a domain name and a hosting service. I keep these two steps together because they can usually be purchased from one site. It’s best to keep the domain name short, simple and memorable. There are many different options for endings but I think the traditional ".com" is best for now. For this video I am going to purchase howtobuildyourblog.com.
In addition to a domain name you will also need hosting. There are literally hundreds of different hosting companies who are all available to host your site and the best thing in my opinion is to pick one company and purchase both your domain name and hosting plan with them. This will save you from complicated steps of having to transfer your domain to a different hosting company. Believe me… I had to transfer my first GoDaddy domain to another hosting company and it was no fun.
I’ve tried many different hosting companies but these days I purchase all my domains and hosting through HostGator so that it’s all in one spot. HostGator is the best hosting company that I’ve ever worked with, and as it is one of the bigger ones, their support team is always available. Pick a hosting plan that is right for you. For most of you that are building a single blog for the first time, the baby plan should be just fine.
Step 3: Now that you have your domain and hosting it’s time to choose a website platform like WordPress & install it. Nearly half of the websites on the internet are running on WordPress, including almost every single one I have built. It's is easy to use and you don’t need to know HTML or how to code. The basic version is free and has tons of different free themes/layouts to choose from. If you signed up with HostGator, you should find your WordPress “one-click-installation” in your account control panel.
Here are the steps you should follow:
Log in to your hosting account. Go to your control panel. Look for the “WordPress” icon. Choose the domain where you want to install your website. Click the “Install Now” button and you should get access to your NEW WordPress website.
Step 4: Pick a theme & upload it. WordPress offers a number of free theme options but I usually turn to Themeforest to pick a theme. There I can sort easily and shop around by checking the live previews and real user reviews. Many of the themes cost around $50 but it's just a one time fee. I recommend choosing a responsive designed website so it scales to look good on mobile devices, tablets, and computers. Also make sure you are picking one that is compatible with a WordPress site.
Once you've got your theme up and running, you're ready to add content to your site!
