I have a confession to make: I’ve been listening to my TV through its little, built-in speaker. Yes, I was a dinosaur...but not anymore! I now have a Home Theater System (and complete music system) that I am damn proud of!
Being a musician and a “musicphile” in general, I had rigged up speakers in every room in the house, along with seemingly miles of cables and speaker wire taped along the baseboards – not that efficient, and not aesthetically pleasing to say the least.
My wife was tired of my huge, ancient speakers sitting on the floor, and we were both tired of plugging in iPads, iPhones, iPods, computers, looking for cords, adapters, wrangling wires, etc. Also, etc. and etc. Huge pain in the butt. All I wanted was something that accessed everything and could be played from anywhere and in anywhere in the house, and sound amazing. Is that too much to ask? No! Sonos to the rescue!
So, what is Sonos? Here’s how they describe themselves: “Sonos is a system of Hi Fi wireless speakers and audio components. It unites your digital music collection in one app that you control from any device. Play what you want in every room over a dedicated wireless network.” There! That‘s what I wanted!
How did I find out about Sonos? Well, being the practical person that I am, I googled “Wireless sound system” and they were the first thing listed. First, I took a look at one of their YouTube videos to get an overview of what they’re able to:
Then, after checking out many rave reviews, I started clicking away on their interactive diagram to build my dream system.
Here what I got:
- A Playbar for my TV / Home Theater
- A Sub for monster bass
- 2 Play:1 Speaker for surround sound
- 3 Play:3 Speakers for each of our bedrooms
- A Connect to turn everything into a streaming system
- A Bridge to make everything work wirelessly in every room
That’s right – I went big. If you’re going to do soothing, do it right. Also, their system is easily expandable if I want to add more stuff or upgrade my speakers. It was easy to set up and the Sonos Controller App let’s me control my system and music from any of our electronic devices.
I can even play different music in different rooms at the same time with just a few swipes and taps. Radio, CD, player, MP3 player, iTunes, Spotify, Pandora – you name it, I’ve got it and I use them all.
Of course the bottom line is “How does it sound?” Umm, like heaven? Yes! Watching TV is now nearly an orgasmic sonic experience. Strong words, but true. Sonos has made me a happy man.
