Interview with a Fashion Expert: Kimberly Smith

Most fashion blogs focus on pricey items that you’d love to own but simply can’t afford. Luckily, Kimberly Smith’s blog, Penny Pincher Fashion, provides pieces that actually fit within your budget! Aside from finding awesome deals, Kimberly also always looks fantastic in the daily outfits she posts on her site – so, her tips are definitely worth taking into consideration! Read on for this fashion expert’s fantastic ideas for looking great!

Your blog, Penny Pincher Fashion, offers women fashion inspiration that won’t drain a budget. What inspired you to start the site?

Initially, I was encouraged by friends and family to start my blog. And then it became such a creative outlet for me that I really started to take it seriously. I’ve found such enjoyment in helping others find great pieces for less and encouraging women to look and feel their best.

How did you first get interested in the world of budget fashion?

When my husband lost his job and was unemployed for almost a year, we had to completely rethink our budget. That was when I really began learning how to find the best deals, shopping the clearance racks, and thrifting.

Your site also covers beauty topics. How do you keep up with the latest beauty trends?

I follow beauty blogs and make-up artists, tear out ideas from magazines, or draw inspiration from the runway looks.

You always look flawless in the pics on your site. What are a few key things you need to put together a good outfit?

My number one rule is that you have to feel good in it - which usually means there is a mix between feminine and modern pieces and typically at least one tailored/structured piece. The key is achieving that balance of proportions and keeping it chic.

We love that your fashion picks are always super affordable. What are 2 or 3 surefire steps you take to find good bargains?

I’m a sale stalker! Sign-up for emails at your favorite online sites so you can be the first to learn about flash sales, check clearance racks regularly when you are in the store and ask the manager about upcoming deals/promotions, and get on the mailing list so you receive hard-copy coupons straight to your home address.

As a mom, it must be hard to raise a family while staying on top of your fashion game. How has being a parent changed your clothing preferences?

I definitely dressed more for comfort when my kids were little. But, now that they are both school-aged and independent, I find myself having fun with fashion again and taking more risks. I also get great outfit ideas from my 10-year-old daughter -– she has an incredible eye for combining colors that I would never dream of pairing together!

You have nearly 8,000 (!) followers on Twitter. Have you ever received a really unique style tip from your readers that you fell in love with?

Another blogger recently told me that their favorite way to layer without adding bulk was to layer a fitted cami over a button-down shirt and then wear the sweater on top. This way the button placket of the shirt isn’t bulging through and it stays in place. I never would have thought of that, and it’s genius!

You’re always completely on top of the latest fashion trends. Are there any current trends that you wish would be over?

I wasn’t a fan of the Birkenstock trend (and I’m still not). I agree that they are comfortable, but they are so unflattering! And, try as I might, I still can’t pull overalls off.

Keeping up with trends is fun, but what are 5 essential items that every woman should have in her closet year-round?

A tailored black blazer, great-fitting jeans, nude pointy pumps, a dress that can take you from day to night, and a button-down shirt in white or chambray.
