Your blog, Leanne Knows, covers a variety of nutrition and fitness topics. What sets your site apart from other blogs?
Honestly, I have not put much thought into this. All the stuff that I blog about is based on a combination of my personal experience, and also what I’ve learned throughout my nutrition course!
You mention in the About Me section of your site that you struggled with your weight during your teenage years, which is a problem many teens face. Can you tell us a little bit about how your issues developed? And what eventually helped you create a healthier lifestyle for yourself?
I had always been quite meaty during high school, and as a result, all the “cool kids” made fun of me. As the emotionally fragile young girl that I was, it was really hard to just ignore them and go about my daily life. So, I developed a mild depression along with anorexia as a result. I lost 30 pounds in a year, and my close friends decided to give me an intervention. I’m so glad they did because the research and effort that they put in made me obliged to live my life for the better. It was then that I decided to undertake my nutrition degree.
Your background includes a Bachelor of Nutrition degree from Iowa State University. Was there anything you learned about nutrition and diet that surprised you?
What amazes me is how the nutritional value of vegetables and fruits has suffered over the years. It’s alarming how genetic engineering in crops intended to produce enough food for the world’s growing population has severely reduced the values vegetables and fruits provide. To put it into perspective, one orange in 2015 only has about 10% of the Vitamin C of an orange in 1990. Surprised?
A lot of us deal with weight issues. What are a few important things everyone should know before they attempt to lose some pounds?
First and foremost, do NOT lose weight for aesthetic purposes. Health is the number one priority. Get your objective right! Fad diets do not work. Eating clean and exercising is the best way to go. Crash diets kill your body slowly and surely. Don’t fall for this trap ever!
You’re a firm believer that fitness goes hand in hand with weight loss. What are your favorite ways to keep active? Also, for individuals who want to get started being more active, where should they start?
The cold weather in Iowa make outdoor activities unbearable. I usually go to a nearby gym for personal training classes to keep fit!
For beginners, the treadmill is your best friend; kick up the incline, and start walking about 30 minutes a day, 4 times a week.
If someone doesn’t have extra time to add exercise into their day, what are some easy ways they can incorporate activity into their lives?
The easiest way is to skip the elevator, go for the stairs! When doing chores at home, kick up the volume, and play fast beat music tracks to help get your heart pumping.
Many people find it hard to stick to a fitness routine. Do you have some tips on helping to stay accountable?
Hmm... A committed workout buddy that keeps you honest usually works best. Another way to stay accountable is to commit monetarily into a training regime, pay thousands of dollars if you have to feel the pinch. Publically, announce to your friends on Facebook that you will get healthier!
You have a lot of fans on Twitter with over 9,000 followers! Do you ever receive unique weight loss or fitness tips sent by fans that you’ve used in your own life?
Oh, I do have a few close friends on Twitter, and we exchange tips and motivate each other all the time. I love all of my followers for the support that they’ve given to me.
Your Twitter account includes a lot of inspirational quotes and positive messages. How do you stay motivated to live healthy every day?
The pain and agony that I have gone through when I was struggling with my weight is something that I would not wish upon my worst enemy. I understand that life has its ups and downs, but we only live once and must soldier on no matter what happens!
You’re also a huge traveler, which means you end up eating out more often and have to change your fitness routine while away. What’s the key to staying healthy while on a trip?
I only eat out on weekends as a means to reward myself. No one can stay strong all week long for a long period of time! I usually sign up for gym memberships that offers regional access to keep myself honest. No compromise about exercise. :)
