Interview with a Style Expert: Teddi Bickers of Loxa Beauty

Some of us can be pretty clueless when it comes to figuring out the latest trends in beauty and hair. That’s why we’re lucky to have stylists like Teddi Bickers from Loxa Beauty! She has inside info on the hottest products, which tools to use, and where to head for beauty inspiration. Read on for some helpful tips from one super talented stylist!

You work as a Pro Stylist for Loxa Beauty. How did your journey in the beauty world begin?

I became a hairstylist because I wanted a career where I could be creative, meet interesting people, and have opportunities to grow. Hair styling has blossomed into more than just a job for me, it’s become what I am truly passionate about. I get to interact with amazing people in my chair on a daily basis, and make them feel great about themselves!

There have been some really great innovations in beauty lately. What is your latest beauty product obsession?

I love using hair powders. They are great to add bulk/grit to freshly washed or flat hair, soaking up excess hair oil, or to add texture when doing a braid or updo. Two of my favorites are Schwartzkopf Osis Dust It Mattifying Powder and Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Volumizing & Texturizing Powder. A little bit goes a long way, so start out minimally if trying one out.

Makeup and hair trends change all the time. What are some classic looks that never go out of style?

I always think you can’t go wrong with a bold lip color! It’s my no-fail way to feel really pulled together. If I’m going to do a bold statement lip color, I make sure to keep it light on everything else, makeup wise. My favorite shades are a bright red or a deep plum/wine color. I also prefer a lip stain, with a lighter gloss or balm over it. That way I’m not paranoid my lipstick has smudged.

Every girl has a cache of blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons to get the perfect look. What one hair tool do you rely on the most?

By far, my most used hair styling tool is my Paul Mitchell Neuro™ Unclipped 1" Rod curling iron. It’s the perfect size for creating loose waves. You’re also able to control the heat temperature on the iron, so I like that I can control how much heat I am applying to my hair. Another great tool is Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium 1 1/4" Spring Curling Iron, which gives great heat stability.

Loxa Beauty has a great following on Facebook and Twitter. Are there beauty experts or bloggers that you follow for on-trend style tips?

I follow Byrdie.com, TheBeautyDepartment.com, and IntotheGloss.com.

Of course, we’re always focused on saving money here at CouponPal. Do you have any recommendations for getting the most for your money with makeup or hair products? And what do you think are the most versatile products on the market right now?

I personally like to keep my makeup bag light, so I try to have multiple purposes for products in there. I use a matte eyeshadow palette like theBalm's Balmsai Eyeshadow and Brow Palette as both my eyebrow powder and for creating a soft smokey eye. A cream blush can work both on my cheeks and as a lip color. I like to use a highlighting powder on my cheek bones, and to create some shimmer on my eyelids.

To me, versatile means something from which you can get many uses. I use my hair conditioner as a shaving cream. I have multiple uses for certain makeup products. Most Argan Oil products can also be applied to your skin as a moisturizer. AG Hair's The Oil and Bain de Terre's Argan Oil & Passion Flower Color Therapy Styling Oil are both great products.

Loxa Beauty also offers helpful tutorials on their site. Where do you head for guidance on perfecting a new makeup trend or hairstyle?

I am always referencing YouTube for how-to videos when it comes to hair and makeup! There are so many great tutorial videos for almost anything you can think of, and most video bloggers do a great job explaining their step by step process. I'm also working on a series of how-to tutorials for Loxa Beauty's blog, theLayer, and their YouTube channel.

Most of us like to look at celebrities for beauty inspiration. Do you have any tips for recreating expensive looks even if you’re on a budget?

I love sourcing celebrities for beauty trends. Especially makeup. I typically splurge on my more “staple” items, like using a higher quality foundation and mascara, and then buy more budget-friendly options when it comes to fun colors that aren't a part of my typical makeup routine. For instance, bright blue eyeshadow or a hot pink lip gloss are something I might wear occasionally, but not frequently enough for me to justify spending the extra cash on the higher quality versions.
