The Best 4G Coverage and the Best Smartphones

Check out this map. That’s a whole lotta red states, isn’t it? Actually, by the time you read this, a lot of those white areas are likely to be filled in with red, too. You’ve probably surmised that this map has nothing to do with the country’s political leanings, and everything to do with what areas of the U.S. Verizon covers with their largest-in-the industry 4G network. And you’re right.

What’s so great about 4G?

4G, which stands for the “fourth generation” of wireless communication services, allows for more data to be transferred and shared at higher speeds and more reliably that previous generations. That means fewer dropped calls, clearer calls, better quality video calls, faster web surfing, and faster uploads and downloads of apps, pictures, and music. Other wireless providers simply do not offer the 4G coverage that Verizon does, and that’s a fact.

What kind of phone do I need to take advantage of 4G?

A new one, most likely. If you’re already taking advantage of 4G, you probably know it, but check to see what your phone and wireless plan is capable of before investing in a new one. But, should you be in the market for a new 4G capable phone, here are three of the best:

The Motorola Droid Maxx

With it’s huge 5 inch screen and 48 hour battery life, this is widely considered to be the best Android smartphone available. It’s fast, the display is crystal clear, and it’s 10 Megapixel Rear-Facing Camera takes incredible photos. Perhaps the coolest feature is its ability to be charged cordlessly. That’s right, you can charge up anywhere by using its charging pad instead of having to plug into to an outlet.

The Samsung Galaxy S4

This one also sports a great 5 inch display but may be harder for some to become masters of all its features - but that’s only because it does A LOT. For example, you can use both the front and rear cameras simultaneously, shooting video of one event while capturing your reactions at the same time. Another feature that makes it one of the best is that it also can function as a TV remote, letting you change channels and browse shows along with a a custom TV guide that recommends shows based on what you previously watched.

The Apple iPhone 5S

Sorry Android lovers, but the iPhone 5S is pretty darn special, as it's Apple’s fastest and most advanced smartphone ever. The gold version pictured here has been nicknamed “The Kardashian phone,” which is either a plus or a minus, depending on, well, many things. What’s definitely a plus is its Touch ID sensor that scans your fingerprint to unlock the phone, making it ultra-secure, and you can use it to make purchases from iTunes or the Apple’s App Store. It also boasts a high-performance processor, making it twice as fast as previous models.

The choice, as they say, is yours. If you’re thinking about getting a new phone, and/or changing carriers to become 4G connected, make sure to check with your current provider (or new one) to see if you’re eligible for a discounted or even free upgrade. If you do decide to go with Verizon Wireless, make sure to check these promo codes for big savings opportunities.

Choose wisely, happy smart-phoning, and may the 4G force be with you.
