This Fall, Rock Runway Style for Retail Prices

As the summer comes to an end, designers are unveiling their latest collections for fall 2013. Lots of new styles appeared on the runway for Fashion Week, from velvet and florals to leather and plaid. All these new designs get me itching to go shopping for my fall wardrobe, but of course I can’t go out and spend my life savings. I know we all want to look like a million bucks for the new season, but not everyone has a million bucks to afford designer prices. That’s why I put together this list of some of my favorite fall trends, and the ways I’ll wear them without breaking the bank.

Peplum

It’s no wonder peplum is still so popular – the cut is chic and it’s flattering on everyone. This fall, Vera Wang, Dior, and other designers charmed us with peplum styles on the runway. Peplum tops and dresses may make you feel like a princess, but you don’t have to be an heiress to afford this flirty look.  Going out? I love this Bronzed Peplum Dress from Nasty Gal; I think it would look great for a date night. I would add some bold bronze jewelry to complete the outfit. I also think this adorable Lace Peplum Top from Forever 21 could take you straight from the office to a dinner party, turning heads all the way.

Leather

You’ve seen the leather pants, and, of course, the boots. This fall, the trend is leather tops. This brave style hit the runway in collections by designers including Calvin Klein and Hermes. It’s a look that’s simultaneously attention-grabbing and classic. Feeling bold, but strapped for cash? You can rock the leather for a fraction of the price with one of these options: This faux leather top  from Forever 21 is a great casual look that I would love to wear out to a concert or to grab a drink with friends. My favorite find is this vegan leather romper by Nasty Gal – bonus for combining leather top with a peplum waist! Plus, double bonus if you use a promo code to get an even better deal.

Velvet Dresses

I never get tired of fabrics that are this fun to touch and look at. Designers like J. Mendel and Emporio Armani featured velvet dresses in their fall collections, and they are as elegant as they are eye-catching. You can wrap yourself up in some luscious royal velvet without paying royal prices for it. Check out these finds: This simple and flattering Kimchi Blue Velvet Skater Dress from Urban Outfitters will have all eyes on you (and the price couldn’t be better). When the weather gets colder, you can throw some patterned leggings on under it. Like longer dresses? Try this regal velvet Solar Spark Midi Dress from NastyGal.com.

Modern Plaid

Thought plaid is just for school uniforms and bagpipe players? Not this fall! Modern plaid was spotted on the runway in the collections of Saint Laurent and Tommy Hilfiger, among others. You can bring it home to your closet for a fraction of designer prices – just look at what I found: This plaid pullover from Forever 21 is perfect for fall and certainly won’t break your budget. With this penny-collar plaid shirt from Urban Outfitters, you can take your plaid to work with you (and you won’t have to spend your whole paycheck to get it).

Black & White

Always a classic look, black & white is back this fall in new collections by designers including Viktor Rolf and Vanessa Bruno. Imitate the runway trend by pairing a white solid top with a black solid skirt. This adorable black and white Plane and Simple Dress from ModCloth could be casual or classy, depending on how you accessorize. You could also try pairing this elegant white peplum top (there’s the peplum again!) from Nasty Gal with black jeans or a black bodycon skirt to complete the look.
