The best holiday in the world occurs next week, but I’m definitely not talking about Valentine’s Day. In fact, February 9-15 marks a somewhat holy time in my life – National Pancake Week. In order to properly celebrate this momentous occasion (besides taking time off work and forcing yourself into a food coma), I’ve developed a list of the very best toppings to go on those special silver dollars.
You can celebrate your love of pancakes by heading out to eat – just check out Restaurant.com for ideas of popular dining spots in your area. You’ll be able to cram down even more pancakes because of the savings you’ll get from a Restaurant.com coupon code. If you fancy yourself a pancake connoisseur, you can also whip up a batch of flapjacks at home.
However you decide to celebrate National Pancake Week, make sure you try these 10 delicious toppings.
1. Mixed Berry Puree
If you’re looking for a healthy option, pick up some fresh berries at the store. Then, puree them before you’re ready to add them to your pancakes. By mixing several berries, you can choose ones that are in season (and are less expensive). Plus, pureeing them allows you to skip the syrup if you’re trying to minimize your sugar intake.
2. Caramel Sauce
For a decadent choice, add some caramel sauce to your pancakes. For an extra twist, throw in some bananas or apples and powdered sugar. Yep, that’s right – I just taught you my secret Caramel Apple Pancake recipe. You’re welcome.
3. Lemon Curd
Adding lemon curd to your pancakes gives it an awesome, citrusy taste. You can make your own or grab a jar at the store.
I love putting jam on pancakes, because you can use any flavor you want. For a more exotic choice, try lingonberry jam. Traditionalists can stick with strawberry, blackberry, etc. Also, for a yummy addition: spread some peanut butter for a unique take on PB&J.
Sliced peaches are super tasty on warm pancakes. When they’re in season, head for the fresh ones; if not, canned ones will do just fine. An extra special treat – add a scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt to get a Peaches and Cream delight!
I’m one of those people that would eat Nutella on anything and everything if I could. The hazelnut spread is especially delicious on pancakes, and ever since eating a Nutella and banana crepe, I have begun adding a banana to my flapjack creations.
7. Shredded Coconut
Coconut is great to add as a topping, because it provides some sweetness. When you combine it with various fresh fruits, it’s a yummy way to get lots of flavor without adding tons of sugar.
8. Ice Cream
Pancakes couldn’t possibly get any better – that is, until you add a scoop of ice cream on top. Is your mind blown? Ice cream instantly takes your mere breakfast food and turns it into the ultimate dessert.
9. Apples and Cinnamon
Another healthy option is chopping up some apples and mixing in cinnamon with the syrup. It elevates plain pancakes without taking a ton of work.
10. Peanut Butter and Chocolate
Stick some peanut butter in the microwave, then add some chocolate chips. Grab a fork, and dig into the magicalness of PB and chocolate pancakes.
Whichever toppings you choose, I hope you have a very Happy National Pancake Week!
