Where to Buy Birkenstocks on a Budget

It used to be that people who wore Birkenstocks were considered hippies (potentially hippies who didn’t care all that much about personal hygiene). But lately, tons of celebs have come forward rocking the sandals, so I’ve had to rethink my opinion. When fashionistas like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Alexa Chung, and Julianne Moore showcase a new trend, I’m much more likely to follow suit. Maybe I wouldn’t go so far as to wear a fur-lined, bedazzled pair like Miley Cyrus, but I’m still willing to give Birkenstocks a chance.

A recent BusinessWeek article (titled “Birkenstocks Are Still Ugly--But At Least Now They’re Cool”) posited that the shoes are seeing a comeback because some very hot designers decided to update the look. Back in 2012, Giambattista Valli created a metallic pair (which retailed for a ridiculous $850), and more affordable designers took notice. Now, accessible brands like Steve Madden and Rachel Zoe have made copies that you can buy without draining your wallet. If you’d like to purchase the authentic brand, there are some fantastic options that will still allow you to stick to your budget.

Birkenstocks are also a great alternative shoe if you need to give your feet a break from those painful high heels. The brand became popular because they’re super comfortable (which makes sense since those hippies probably did a ton of walking!). They’re specifically designed to mold to your feet, giving you support in all the right places.

Check out these 4 stores for the best places to find Birkenstocks on a budget!

Sierra Trading Post

I didn’t know much about this site until I started to research the Birkenstock trend. Turns out, they have a huge shoe selection with tons of affordable prices. With over 90 Birkenstock options, you’re guaranteed to find a style you like. I’m digging the high-fashion looking Birki’s by Birkenstock Catalina Platform Sandals, since the patent leather makes them seem a little more fancy. You can snag this pair (and other similar styles) for around $64. If you want to lower your price even more, use a coupon code at checkout.

Luisaviaroma

If you’re willing to spend a tad more for super high-quality leather, then Luisaviaroma is a good choice. This Birkenstock Premium Kairo Woven Leather pair is perfect for a more traditional choice (but the woven detail still makes it look unique). Although this pair is $217, you can use a discount code at checkout for more savings. Plus, the money is worth it for shoes that won’t fall apart at any point in your lifetime.

Luisaviaroma also offers the Birkenstock Premium Yara Schwarz Woven Leather style, if you’re interested in a more gladiator-type sandal. Whichever pair you choose, you can be sure that you’ll always get insanely well-crafted shoes from this site.

Zappos

Zappos is well known for having a gigantic selection and crazy good customer service. They also have more than 180 styles of Birkenstocks (including options for men and kids). Zappos offers pretty much every color (and a couple of fun prints), so you can easily find the ideal pair for you.

I really like these silver Birkenstock Granadas (pictured above) - the double strap is pretty cute, and they’re adjustable so you can get the perfect fit. Also, you can snag this pair for less than 90 bucks.

Another unique pair is the paisley print Birkenstock Arizona by Papillio (also available for $89). Zappos notes that this style offers a soft suede lining, which can actually absorb moisture and ensures your feet don’t get too sweaty. I have a number of pairs of sandals (especially my Rainbow flipflops) that get discolored from sweat, so this is an awesome feature!

Shoebuy

Shoebuy is another site that is constantly offering great deals on a variety of shoes. With over 160 women’s Birkenstock styles, you have plenty to choose from. These Birkenstock Madrid sandals look super comfortable, and they’re probably easier to walk in than the platform version (like the first pair I mentioned from Sierra Trading Post). The white patent leather is perfect for summer, and you can’t beat the $69 price tag.

If you don’t mind going up a little in price, the Birkenstock Gizeh in Insignia Blue is a really cool shade and has a comfy T-strap design. For $89, they’re still less expensive than if you purchased them at another retailer.

Even if these sandals aren’t technically the coolest shoe out there, if you want to try out the trend, you’ll be in good company with other fashion-loving celebs.
