The recent death of Osama Bin Laden and the White House's decision to keep the photos of his body confidential has prompted a new wave of spam and malicious software across the World Wide Web. When US officials decided against releasing photos of the slain leader earlier this month, spammers and cybercrimials used it as an opportunity to target inboxes and social networking sites with fake links and posts promising gory details of his death.

The links being sent out are at the very least spam and at the most, can lead to malware that can infect and even disable your computer. Facebook is encouraging users to report any suspicious content or messages as spam and report them to the site.

The FBI is also advising computer users to have an up-to-date firewall and anti-virus software running on their computers to detect and deflect malicious software. The FBI's Internet Complaint Center also recommends the following:

1. Adjust the privacy settings on social networking sites you frequent to make it more difficult for people you know and do not know to post content to your page. Even a "friend" can unknowingly pass on multimedia that's actually malicious software.

2. Do not agree to download software to view videos. These applications can infect your computer.

3. Read e-mails you receive carefully. Fraudulent messages often feature misspellings, poor grammar, and nonstandard English.

4. Report e-mails you receive that purport to be from the FBI. Criminals often use the FBI's name and seal to add legitimacy to their fraudulent schemes. In fact, the FBI does not send unsolicited e-mails to the public. Should you receive unsolicited messages that feature the FBI's name, seal, or that reference a division or unit within the FBI or an individual employee, report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

1. Create a strong password. Sorry Spot, but pets' names should never be used as a computer password. Neither should numbers from your birthdate or social security number. Experts recommend using a combination of letters, numbers and symbols for generating the most hack-proof passwords.

Don't use the same password for everything and don't let your computer automatically save your password for you. It may take a few extra minutes to login, but that's nothing compared to the time you would have to spend dealing with the negative effects of identity theft. 2. Use a secure internet connection. There are hundreds of thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots popping up across the country that allow you to wirelessly connect to the Internet whether you are at the dog park or the coffee shop. But these are also prime targets for cybercriminals. Hackers can set up fake, but genuine-looking Wi-Fi networks and lie in wait for users to log on. The hacker then scans laptops logged into the network for credit card numbers and other personal information. To keep your personal information secure, the best option is to only use a password-protected wireless connection, or use a hardwired Internet connection from your home.

3. Get your computer in fighting shape. Make sure you have firewall protection installed on your computer. A firewall puts up a virtual wall between your computer network and the outside world and prevents malicious traffic from coming in.

Along with a Firewall, make sure your computer is installed with up-to-date antivirus software. Hackers can attempt to install spyware on your computer to get sensitive personal information, but having an active antispyware and antivirus enabled on your computer will help your computer fend off these types of cybercrime.

Ding! A new email just landed in your inbox.

It's a Facebook message from your old college roommate. And it's titled, "I can't believe you did this!" followed by a link.

Crap. Did he finally post that video of you at the Kappa Epsilon fraternity party doing a beer-fueled rendition of Moulin Rouge? Since your grandma just "friended" you, you're a little more cautious about what gets posted on your Facebook page. You click the link, big mistake.

You just picked up a nasty bit of spyware that could disable your entire computer.

With more than 500 million active users, Facebook is now one of the most popular vehicles for cyber attackers. Security reports estimate social networking sites and mobile apps are the next big target for attackers in 2011, much more so than one-time email viruses like the Worm or I Love You.

Most commonly, these attacks happen when one of your "friends" on Facebook sends you a link that says something like, "You have to watch this video," or "I can't believe you did this."

Once you click on the link, the spyware disables your computer allowing you to visit only one website set up to get users to buy fake anti-virus software.

Those who pay the money for the so-called virus protection will be directed to yet another fake page that looks like the computer is dumping your "bad" files.

If this happens, experts recommend pressing ALT-F4 repeatedly until the screen goes black, then dump temporary internet files, run a legit virus scan and reboot. Having your own updated virus protection is another way to make sure you don't get duped by Facebook attacks.

A computer virus is keeping me awake, literally.

The clock reads 3:26 a.m. and I wake up to voices in my apartment. I begrudgingly get out of bed and trace the sound to my closed laptop.

Opening it, I see a video being played on my computer.

I have a virus, adware to be exact. When my computer sits idle for an extended amount of time the malware opens an Internet browser and starts playing a video.

I consider myself a pretty savvy computer user. So I'm pretty embarrassed to admit I know exactly how I got duped into downloading this virus.

I was multitasking around the house while trying to finish some work on the computer and I needed to download MSN Messenger to communicate with an editor. It wasn't a legit MSN Messenger site. In fact, recent reports show that as much of 38 percent of Google searches can lead to malicious software that can infect your computer.

In my case, I ended up with three unknown icons on my desktop, which I was able to identify and uninstall, but I kept having the reoccurring problem of my computer playing random videos like the one that woke me up at an ungodly hour of the morning.

A scan of anti-virus software seemed to fix the problem for good, but not after a few frustrating and sleepless hours.

Lesson learned, the hard way.
