The nostalgic romance of the early jet set days in the 1960s is alive and well at InterContinental. The 5-star chain of luxury hotels started out as a venture into Latin America and the Caribbean by Pan America World Airways. Now the name is synonymous with leisure in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. As part of the InterContinental Hotels Group, IHG Rewards Club members earn loyalty points when they stay at their other fine places of lodging. These include Hualuxe, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Even Hotels, Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites, and Candlewood Suites. The group is also affiliated with Bass Brewery, Britain’s most popular beer which has been brewed since the 18th century.
The first InterContinental was opened in Belem, Brazil in April of 1946. The opulent destination was built by Pan America due to the lack of 5-star accommodations in the area. Commercial jets as we know them were not developed until the early Sixties. As the airline’s routes continued to grow, they constructed more InterContinentals across the globe. PanAm peaked in the 1970s, but by 1981 the decided to sell their hotel group, and in 1991 the company declared bankruptcy. The InterContinental bounced around a bit before being acquired by Bass Brewery in 1998. Bass, an inn founded in 1777 at Burton Upon Trent, became the largest beer company and hotel chain in the United Kingdom.
