If you have not taken American history for awhile, Richard Sears and Alvah C. Roebuck published the first Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalog in 1888. Customers appreciated the wide variety of goods and clearly labeled price tags, something hard to find in rural general stores. Gradually people began to look forward to the arrival of the hundred-page Sears Catalogs. The first department store opened in Chicago during 1925 and many more followed. When they built the Sears Tower in Chicago in 1973 it was the tallest building in the world, and it’s still the second-tallest. Sears was the biggest retailer in the US until 1989. In 2004, Kmart merged with Sears and adopted their name, creating a new company called Sears Holdings Corporation.
