The employees at the Post Office are bureaucrats that are under no obligation to provide pleasant customer service. Going there can be a matter of enduring through long lines and waiting hours for your number to be called. Thankfully somebody at USPS had the idea to start selling postage online, including the option to customize your own unique stamps.

Why do I have to provide my personal information?

Federal regulations require you to provide your name, telephone number, and the physical address from which the postage will be printed. This data is necessary in order to issue you an unique virtual postage meter identification number.

What USPS services are available online?

You can enjoy electronic confirmation service options such as electronic delivery and signature confirmation by email. This service usually requires a fee at the Post Office, but if you do it through Stamps.com there is free delivery confirmation for First Class Package Service and Priority Mail. For Parcel Select and Media Mail the fee is $0.19 as opposed to $0.85 at the Post Office. Electronic signature confirmation is $2.10 instead of $2.55.

Using the Stamps.com software you can import orders from most major eCommerce websites, includng eBay, PayPal, Etsy, Amazon, Volusion, X-Cart, Google Checkout, and OsCommerce.

How do I pay for the stamps?

In order to make use of Stamps.com you are required to pay a monthly service fee. If you choose to insure your mail, the charges will be reflected at the end of your monthly billing cycle.

When you buy postage you have to pay for it before you can print it out. You can not buy postage individually, but rather you buy a ‘book’ of stamps from which money is deducted for each transaction. You can even set up a low postage warning that alerts you when its time to buy more stamps.

How do I use the Stamps.com software?

After installing the free Stamps.com software program onto your computer, open the application. A login dialogue box should appear on the screen. Enter your username and password. The Stamps.com software require an Internet connection.

Why won’t my stamps print?

If you want your parcel to be delivered to the right place, it is important to accurately print out your postage. If nothing prints at all, the USPS recommends trying the Print Sample button. This will allow you to make as many test prints as you want without deducting payment from your account. If the postage is printing on the wrong side of your sticker or envelope, turn it around to the opposite side before you try again. If the postage appears in the incorrect place on the envelope, you may need to rotate the page on the printing tray.

What can I send through the mail anyway?

The following items can NEVER be sent through USPS: any illegal item, concealable firearms, ammunition, alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content 0.5% by weight or greater, excessive amounts of tobacco, gasoline, explosives or fireworks, chemical irritants like tear gas or pepper spray, liquid cell batteries, Hydrogen Peroxide over 20% solution, any item containing mercury, unauthorized medication, live animals, or any packaging that advertises any of the previous.

Special permissions are required for: aerosol cans or pressurized cans and tanks, rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, acetone, unloaded non-concealable firearms like rifles and antique weapons, prescription medication, sharp instruments like knives or razors, fresh fruit or vegetables.

Visit the USPS online for more information regarding legal regulations.

It is completely possible to print official US postage from your printer and computer. It is done using a new branch of the USPS called Stamps.com.

This service is especially helpful for individuals and organizations that experience a regular flow of high volume shipping. Small businesses, eCommerce sites, and multi-location enterprises save time and money when they make their own stamps. Individuals appreciate the convenience of printing postage from their home office, and fun of customizing new stamp designs with their own photos.

Here is how to get started.

Step 1) Sign up for membership.

To use Stamps.com it is necessary to join as a paid member. Membership costs $15.99 per month, plus the cost of postage. You get to contribute money to the US Postal Service, and save an extra percentage off for priority mail, international shipping, and package insurance. Members of Stamps.com can print out exact postage whenever they need it and ship packages from their home address.

Step 2) Download the software.

You have to download the Stamps.com software in order to start printing your own stamps. You will need to be connected to the Internet. The program is designed to run on a personal computer with Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8. The software is not currently supported by Apple. Stamps.com suggests using a Windows emulator if you are on a Macintosh.

Step 3) Set up the additional hardware.

Printer: In order to print stamps, you will need a Windows-compatible ink jet printer with a resolution of over 300-dpi. The USPS recommends the Stamps.com LabelWriter.

Scale: When you join Stamps.com, they send you an official postal scale, so you can accurately determine the weight of parcels. You may have to allow for shipping time at first, while they bring you the scale.

Step 5) Print out postage as needed.

Once you figure out how to print out postage and schedule pick ups there will be no stopping your online business. You will also enjoy special features like order integration with eBay and Amazon, batch printing, hidden postage, one-click package tracking, recipient email notifications, and easy-print return labels.

4 Ways Stamps.com Helps You Live Longer

It’s safe to say that going to the post office is about as much fun as going to the DMV. Since post offices everywhere are closing branches and cutting down on hours and staffing, the lines at the post office are worse than ever before.

Avoid the youth-depleting madness that is the post office and satisfy all of your postage needs at Stamps.com. This site is budget-friendly, convenient, and easy to use. Here are four ways Stamps.com adds years to your life.

1. Time Saver

Life isn’t an amusement park. You shouldn’t have to waste your time and energy waiting in line. Think of all the things you could be doing while you’re waiting in line at the post office. Add up the minutes you’ve spent waiting to mail a package, or buying stamps. You could’ve learned a new language in that time. You could’ve finished work early, taken a nap, read a book, cooked a meal, spent time with your loved ones. But instead, you were at the post office.

Stamps.com makes buying postage easy. Stamps.com is available 24/7 and you can print your postage or shipping labels after you download the Stamps.com software.

2. Money Saver

Think about the gas you waste by driving to and from the post office every time you need to ship something. Think about what you could be doing instead of driving to and from the post office. You could be working. You could be earning more money. You could be online discovering new coupons and other ways to save money on your everyday necessities.

And BONUS – with the Stamps.com software, you’ll also receive a free digital scale, schedule free package pickups, and you can often take advantage of deals that offer free postage. #moneysaver

3. Life Saver

“Going postal” isn’t just a timeless reference from the movie "Clueless." It’s also a phrase that was coined after multiple postal service workers buckled under the pressure of sorting incoming mail, and never ending lines of people, went completely insane and acted out violently.

By staying home and using Stamps.com, you’re saving the sanity of your local post office employees. And you’re protecting the lives of those individuals that still choose to go to the post office. One less person in the line can make a difference. You’re sort of a hero.

4. Stress Reducer

We never have to wait for things anymore. Instant viewing, instant shipping, instant messaging – we no longer have to practice patience. So when you go to the post office and have to wait in line, you probably experience some level of stress.

Do you know what stress does to the body? Premature aging, weakened immune system, disease, depression, etc. Do you want to deal with even one of those things? No. Minimize the stress in your life by using Stamps.com for all of your mailing needs and improve your overall health.

So, I took advantage of the great Black Friday Deals and made all of our holiday gift purchases online -- so much better than fighting the crowds. All in all (not counting our own kids) I bought 16 different presents for nieces, nephews, siblings, moms, dads, and other people genetically connected to my wife and I.

I was happy.

My wife came home and I proudly told her all about my shopping experience. As I started to list everything I had bought, she interrupted me with a question: “Did you have them sent to the people who are getting them, or did you have them all shipped here?” “Um, here.”

“Great, then you get to be the one to go the Post Office and lug 16 packages that have to weighed, insured, then re-shipped. At Christmas time. Have fun.”

Then she added that she hoped we got them all on time so that I could make sure everybody else would get them on time.

I was sad.

Off to the Post Office I went. Was it fun? No, it was not. It was a horrible, teeth-gnashing, mind-numbing experience that I vow to never repeat, and wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Okay, my worst enemy but that’s it.

I was angry.

After I returned home a broken man, my wife (sweetheart that she is) informed me that she has discovered Stamps.com on the internet, and that I should check it out. I did.

Guess what they do? The same thing the Post Office does, except they allow you to do it at home and print out everything you need from your computer. They provide scales, stamps, First Class mail, Express Mail, Certified Mail shipping labels, insurance – everything. The best is that you can even schedule free USPS pick-ups at your door. It’s also cheaper than the Post Office. So, I signed us up, using a Stamps.com promo code that saved me a hundred bucks.

I was happy again.

Don’t let my shipping nightmare become yours. Sign up for Stamps.com today and make your life a whole lot easier.

Long Live the U.S.P.S.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor digitization nor financial default will stay the couriers of the United States Postal Service from their appointed rounds. True, the U.S.P.S. just recently posted a quarterly loss of $740 million dollars, Congress is making extraordinary demands of it, and it has to compete with the likes of Amazon, FedEx, UPS, and digital media and correspondence consumption. That said, the Postal Service is still a vital organ of this country, and to prove it, here’s a list of reasons why we should care a little bit more about the survival of this foundational institution. The next time you send something through the U.S.P.S., use a Stamps.com coupon code.

The U.S.P.S. Is a Huge Employer

Since its creation in 1775, the U.S.P.S. has been a steady and reliable place of employment offering more than livable wages and sizable pensions. Entry is granted after satisfactory scores on a civil service exam, and the hiring process favors veterans, offering them much need jobs. It employs more than half a million people, and just over 100,000 veterans. That’s a lot of jobs for a lot of people important to this country.

It Provides Where Others Cannot

The United States Postal Services delivers 160 million pieces of mail a year. They service remote islands and hard to access locales, unlike many private delivery companies and retailers. They also are the only communications provider for many low-income and rural areas deprived of widespread internet access (or access at all). It may seem like everyone and their Facebook friend’s mother has internet, but really 30% of Americans don’t have internet in their homes, says the Pew Foundation. Also, personal sellers on Ebay and Etsy, to name two, much prefer using the U.S.P.S. for its significantly lower cost, another comparative advantage of the institution.

This is Congress’ Problem

In 2006 then President George W. Bush signed a bill called the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, which required the Postal Service, the only government organization asked to do this, to prefund all its retiree health benefits 75 years into the future. For the past 8 years, the Postal Service has had to redirect its revenue streams (which often are surpluses) to satisfy this government mandate, running them a loss. So any claims that according to monetary statistics general opinion holds the U.S.P.S. in low regard don’t take into account the fact that the institution would be turning a profit were it not by this law.

Private Alternatives Depend on the U.S.P.S.

Companies like FedEx and DHL might have the leg up on speed, but surprisingly they still rely on the U.S.P.S to perform much of their business. In fact, FedEx shipped an estimated 30% of its deliveries by U.S.P.S. in 2011, and other private firms frequently partner with the Postal Service to spread their workload.

So the next time you hear somebody say print is dead, you stick a stamp on their lips and tell them the truth: the Postal Service ain’t going nowhere. Don’t forget to use a Stamps.com coupon code when you buy stamps for your package.
